The Nebraska football team held its first major scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning. Following practice, Head Coach Matt Rhule met with members of the media to discuss the team's performance in its first scrimmage.
“I thought we were really efficient, and I thought we were able to both run the ball and throw the ball,” Rhule said. Defensively, Rhule said, “I just think on defense we have to continue to tackle. We have a lot of elite running backs, and it’s really hard to tackle those guys.”
Rhule was also asked to expand on Nebraska's running backs, a group Rhule has tremendous confidence in.
“We have great backs. For anyone who doesn’t think we have three great backs, I can’t wait for them to see these dudes,” Rhule said. “[Isaiah] Mozee’s a dude, Mekhi [Nelson] might be one of the fastest guys I’ve seen going from the first five steps. I think that’s a loaded room for us."
From a special teams standpoint, Rhule talked about the impact freshman punter Archie Wilson has made on his teammates and the coaching staff.
“I just could watch Archie punt all day,” Rhule said. “We’re going to go over to Arrowhead Stadium with a kicker who can kick with both feet and kick all the kicks and it will be the first football game he's ever played in before. I know he was at Prokick Australia, but he has never played in a game before; it will be his first-ever football game. He left his country and left his family to play a sport he’s never played before. He’s one of the coolest guys around.”
