Big Red to Take on Bears in NCAA First Round

In its first NCAA Championships tournament appearance in 14 years, the No. 41 Nebraska men’s tennis team is set to take on No. 19 Baylor in the first round on Saturday morning. The Huskers (15-9, 8-5 Big Ten) will face the Bears (22-10, 6-2 Big 12) as the first match on at the College Station, Texas, regional weekend. The first round dual is slated for May 3, with first serves at 10 a.m. (CT).

Nebraska seeks its first NCAA tournament win, in its third-ever championship berth. Baylor’s bid comes after its Big 12 tournament run to the semifinal, to make its 27th-consecutive NCAA appearance. The Huskers and the Bears met once earlier this season, with BU taking the match 4-2 in Lincoln, Neb., despite three upset match losses. Entering Saturday’s dual, NU has two appearances in the ITA rankings, No. 69 Calvin Mueller in singles and No. 77 Anton Shepp/Lars Johann in doubles.

History: 27-3 BU leads; In the programs’ 30 all-time meetings, the Bears have won 27 matches against NU. The Huskers’ last win over Baylor was in 1996.
As of the May 1 ITA rankings, four BU doubles duos made appearances: No. 27 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen/Marko Miladinovic, No. 64 Devin Badenhorst/Luc Koenig, No. 72 Zsombor Velcz/Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and No. 82 Zsombor Velcz/Devin Badenhorst. There are currently two Bears in the singles rankings: No. 33 Devin Badenhorst and No. 112 Zsombor Velcz.

After the early February match, the Huskers hold wins over ranked Badenhorst, Velcz and duo Brostrom Poulsen/Miladinovic.

Last season, the No. 39 Bears fell 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. BU lost to No. 18 San Diego, and put the team at 5-5 when playing at a College Station regional. Baylor holds a combined record of 42-6 in the first two rounds of the tournament and an overall mark of 67-25.

The winners of Saturday’s matches will meet on Sunday, May 4, to determine who will advance to the super-regional weekend (May 9-11) in the field of 16.
