After concluding the regular season with the most conference wins in program history, the Nebraska men’s tennis team is headed to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Tournament. The fifth-seeded Huskers (15-8, 8-5 Big Ten) take on their quarterfinal match against No. 4 Washington (16-7, 8-5 Big Ten) on Friday, April 25, at 10 a.m. (CT).
Nebraska seeks to avenge its 4-3 regular season loss to UW, to advance to its second consecutive and ever appearance in a tournament semifinal. In their earlier matchup, the Huskers notched the doubles point, as well as singles victories from Anton Shepp and Joan Torres Espinosa.
NU enters the tournament as the fifth seed, matching its seeding from the last two seasons. In current ITA national rankings, the Huskers come in at No. 40, while the Huskies are No. 39. All-Big Ten First Team selection Calvin Mueller is in the singles rankings at No. 67, while doubles duo Shepp and Lars Johann land at No. 70.
#39 Washington (16-7, 8-5 Big Ten)
History: 3-2 UW leads; Since their first match in 1985, the Huskies have won three of five duals, including the last two. Most recently, the Huskers lost 4-3 in Seattle. UW currently has one Husky in the rankings, #38 Cesar Bouchelaghem. Washington closed its regular season with a 6-1 loss, hosting #31 Illinois.
The Huskers are coming off a split weekend at home, after upsetting #26 USC, 4-2, and falling to #21 UCLA, 4-1. The Huskers concluded home play with a 7-3 record when playing at Dillon. Head Coach Peter Kobelt has led the team to a program record most conference wins, all-time.
