Huskers Drop Final Match 4-2 at Oregon

After a 2-0 start, the No. 73 Nebraska women’s tennis team concluded its season in a hard fought battle in Eugene, Ore., on Sunday, April 20 in a 4-2 loss. The Big Red (12-12, 2-11 Big Ten) claimed the doubles point and a singles win from Maria Taranova, but the Ducks (9-13, 2-11 Big Ten) persisted and came out on top. 

Starting the Big Ten match with doubles, Lucy Loy and Ana Zamburek dropped their match to Tilde Jagare and Juliet Santitto on Court One, 6-0. Reya Lee Coe and Emma Rizzetto fired back from Court Two, downing Bridget Mihulka and Karin Young, 7-5. To secure the doubles point against the Ducks, No. 3 doubles Maria Taranova and Natalia Trigosso grabbed the victory over Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza with a 7-5 score. 

Up with the doubles point, Taranova finished first on Court Two to put the Huskers at 2-0 with her 6-1, 6-4, win against Karin Young. Court Five finished next, as Coe fell 7-5, 7-6(6) to Aparisi. No. 3 singles went to Oregon’s Jagare, defeating Rizzetto 7-6(8), 7-5. Court Six pushed the Ducks to a 3-2 lead, as Santitto took down Loy in three sets, 6-2, 6(5)-7, 6-1. Despite taking the first set, Zamburek fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Souza, clinching the dual for UO. The match on Court Four between Tiziana Rossini and Daughters was abandoned.

Aside from their 13th double’s point of the season, Taranova notched the only other point for the Huskers. The singles victory was her 22nd of the season, notching a second year for sophomore with 20+ singles wins. 

With the loss, the Huskers conclude their season 12-12 (2-11 Big Ten). The Big Red will not compete in the Big Ten tournament, which hosts a playing field of the 12 highest teams in conference standings. After their first meeting in 30 years, NU and Oregon are now tied 2-2 in the all-time series history.
