Ossi Shatters School Record in First Weekend Match

Behind senior captain Cecelia Ossi's school-record smallbore score of 597, the No. 8 Nebraska rifle team defeated No. 19 UTEP by a score of 4,720-4,547 on Saturday. 

The smallbore record which was set almost 20 years ago by Kristina Fehlings, who shot a 593 in the event.

NU’s six shooters took the top six spots overall. Ossi grabbed the first-place finish with a career-high aggregate score of 1,191. Sophomore Emma Rhode placed second with a 1,181 and freshman Charlotte Mick was third with a 1,180. Junior Mackenzie Strauch (1,168, fourth), sophomore Camilla Johannessen (1,160, fifth) and senior Madelynn Erickson (sixth, 1,154) rounded out the team.

“The team did well today,” Head Coach Mindy Miles said. “Cecelia posted a very impressive 597 in smallbore and kept her aggregate above 1,190. As a team, we did well in air rifle. Tomorrow will give us another chance to solidify our team score and build some confidence going into the conference championships.”

Nebraska grabbed the top five spots in the air rifle. Rhode placed first with a 597 and Mick was second, also with a 597. The tiebreaker was determined by the number of 10-point shots by each athlete. Ossi finished in third with a 594, Strauch was fourth with a 593 and Johannessen placed fifth with a 584. 

Huskers swept the top five spots in the smallbore. Ossi’s record score took first place by a 13-point margin. Rhode placed second with a 584 and Mick finished in third with a 583. Johannessen (576, fourth) and Strauch (575, fifth) rounded out the lineup.
