Incoming Husker freshman bowler Karina Capron took home the U18 title at the 2024 Junior Gold Championships in Allen Park, Mich., Saturday evening.
Capron, the U12 2017 Junior Gold Champion, qualified for match play in sixth after five qualifying rounds. In matches of two games total pinfall, Capron defeated Maggie Smith 427-295, Amanda Lang 394-391 and Melia Mitskavich 395-373 before facing Kaitlyn Stull in a match to decide the placements for the tv show. Capron fell to Stull 441-414 and earned the second-place spot in the finals.
In the first match of the championship finals, the Fremont, Neb., native met fellow Husker Kayla Starr and won 192-180 to face Stull in a rematch. Capron came out on top 204-173 and claimed the title.
Overall, the Huskers had an impressive showing at this year’s tournament as Starr finished third and the final newcomer, Haley Swindle, moved on the advancer’s round after qualifying and finished 57th.
