Huskers Add Transfer Symran Shah

Symran Shah will join the Nebraska women's golf team for the 2024-25 season, Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland announced on Monday, June 3.

Shah, a transfer who spent her first two collegiate seasons at Virginia Tech, will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Shah competed as an individual at the Valspar Augusta Invitational as a true freshman for the Hokies, totaling 165 (79-86) over two rounds at Forest Hills Golf Club (March 12-13, 2023). She redshirted as a sophomore in 2023-24.

"We're very excited to have Symran join our team. I watched her play a lot of golf when she was in high school, and she is a focused competitor and a very skilled player," Sutherland said. "Her sister Serena played for me at SMU, so I'm familiar with the support that her family brings to her and to our team. I know it's a great fit."

A native of Carrollton, Texas, Shah recently fired rounds of 76 and 74 to tie for 51st in a 132-player field on a par-72, 6,300-yard layout at the Texas Women's Open in Grapevine (May 29-31). She tied for 12th at the 2023 Texas Women's Open at The Bridges Golf Course in Gunter (May 31-June 2) with a three-round total of 217 (+1).

"I'm thrilled to join the University of Nebraska and pursue my academic and athletic career under coaches Jeanne Sutherland and Matt Zedrick," Shah said. "I'm excited to be part of a program that values excellence both in the classroom and on the course. Go Huskers!"

Shah was a three-time team MVP for the Hebron High School team that won the Texas 6A UIL District and State Golf Championships in 2021. She was also the 2019 All-District UIL champion. As a high school freshman, she broke the Hebron school record with a low round of 65.

An accomplished junior golfer, Shah won the inaugural First Tee National Championship at Clemson, S.C., in 2021. She qualified for the USGA Girls Junior Championship in 2018. She also captured an individual title at the AJGA Gateway First Bank Tulsa Junior Open in 2020. It followed a championship at the Texas Legends Alamo Shootout in 2019 and a win at the TaylorMade Junior Open presented by PGA Superstore in 2018.

Shah qualified for the Women's USGA Four-Ball in 2019 and played in the Texas Women's Open in 2020. She also competed in the Rolex Tournament of Champions in 2020 and was invited to play in the Rolex Junior Championship in 2020 and 2021. She owns a low round of 64 and was listed as high as No. 93 in the Rolex AJGA rankings.

The daughter of Ravi and Chhaya Shah, Symran's sister, Serena, played for Sutherland at SMU. Serena was an All-AAC selection as a senior at SMU in 2022, after top-10 individual finishes at the AAC Championship in 2021 and 2022. She was a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar (2020, 2021, 2022). Symran plans to major in business administration at Nebraska.
