Harry Crockett fired a final round 67 (-5) and Jeremy Sisson were among the multiple Huskers who set career-highs to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a season-best 13 strokes under par and a new fall season stroke average at the White Sands Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 30.
Nebraska opened the tournament by matching its best round of the fall season on Friday with a 280 (-8). After a second round 288 (E), a final-round 283 (-3) was not enough for the Huskers, but their three-round score of 851 (-13) set a new record for fall season stroke average. Nebraska's mark of 289.64 beat the previous record average of 290.67, which was set in Fall 2021.
Despite the records being set, Nebraska was unable to keep up with tournament champions Duke. The nationally ranked Blue Devils finished with an astonishing three-round aggregate score of 823 (-41). However, there was only a four-stroke difference between third place Arkansas State (-17) and Nebraska (-13).
Jeremy Sisson had a career weekend in the Bahamas, netting a sixth-place finish and setting a new career best. His previous best finish was 18th (Rich Harvest Farms, 10/4/21). He also tied his career best with a 68 (-4) in Saturday's round, marking the second time he has done that this fall and fourth time overall. Sisson also notched his second top-25 effort in four tournaments this fall, tallying three sub-par rounds in the Bahamas (69-68-70), which matches his career total (3) coming into this year. His 54-hole score of 207 also set a new career-best, beating his previous career-best of 214 by seven strokes.
Harry Crockett (Oxted, England) wrapped up his fall season with another stellar performance. The sophomore fired a 210 (-6) to finish in a tie for 11th place, just nearly missing his second straight top-10. He finished his first 11 rounds as a Husker with a stroke average of 71.82, which is on pace for the best mark in school history. His 54-hole score of 210 (-6) also beat his previous mark of 213 (-3), which he set at the Purdue Fall Invite on Oct. 10-11.
Evan McDermott (Spring Lake, Mich.) fired a career-best 67 (-5) on Friday before responding with a 74 (+2) and a 75 (+3) to set a new career-best 54-hole score of 216 (E), beating his previous mark of 228 (Purdue Fall Invitational, 10/11/22). A true freshman, McDermott competed in the final two tournaments of fall play and posted a 74.00 stroke average in eight rounds.
Reed Malleck returned to the Nebraska lineup and set his career-best with a final round 69 (-3) to finish his fall season on a high note. The junior from York, Nebraska also set a new career-low 54-hole score, securing a 219 (+3). Malleck has two subpar rounds this season, which is the best mark of his career thus far.
Will Marshall finished in a tie for 50th place with a three-round score of 220 (+4). Marshall closes his fall season with a 73.45 stroke average and will look to continue to build momentum in his final spring as a Husker.
A couple of newcomers continued to make strides for the Big Red. Grant Jabenis made his second straight appearance for Nebraska, golfing individually. Jabenis carded a three-round score of 71-73-80 (+8) to finish in 59th place. The freshman closed his first fall with Nebraska with a 74.83 stroke average in six rounds competed. Meanwhile, Quinn Yost finished his fall season with a three-round score of 231 (79-79-73) and finished his first eight rounds with a stroke average of 74.50.
The Nebraska men's golf team will return to action with Big Ten Match Play Feb. 3-4 at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla. You can stay up to date with your Cornhuskers on Instagram and Twitter @HuskersGolf.
