Iowa City, Iowa – The Nebraska soccer team fell to Iowa 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City.
For only the third time this season, the Huskers were outshot in the first half as the Hawkeyes held the 11-3 advantage. Despite NU not being able to find the back of the net in the first 45, junior Eleanor Dale had a pair of chances that were saved by the Iowa goalie.
Iowa (4-6-6, 1-3-4 Big Ten) scored its first goal of the game in the 32nd minute off a penalty kick. The Hawkeyes then extended its lead with an own goal by the Huskers in the 42nd minute. Iowa shot the corner kick into the goal box, which went off a Husker defender and into the net.
The Huskers entered halftime trailing 2-0, but edged Iowa in corner kicks (2-1) and tied the Hawkeyes in saves with three apiece.
NU (6-5-5, 4-2-2 Big Ten) started the second half aggressively on offense with a few more scoring chances highlighted by a play in the 61st minute. Sophomore Sarah Weber shot a pass downfield to Schwarz who gathered and took a shot in the penalty box which was saved by the Iowa goalie.
Although the Huskers tallied five shots in the second half, they were not able to record a finish as the Hawkeyes put the game out of reach with two goals in the second half. Iowa's Caroline Halonen scored in the 73rd minute and her teammate Hailey Rydberg recorded a goal of her own to take the 4-0 lead.
Overall, Iowa held the advantages in shots (20-7), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (8-4).
Junior goalkeeper Sami Hauk recorded five saves in 90 minutes of action and was joined by Lauryn Anglim and Gwen Lane in playing the entire game.
