Huskers Tie Spartans, 2-2

Lincoln, Neb. – Behind first career goals from two Husker freshmen, the Nebraska soccer team (4-6-2, 0-2-2) played Michigan State (7-1-3, 2-1-1) to a 2-2 draw on Thursday night at Hibner Stadium.
 
The Huskers struck first in the 32nd minute as freshman Haley Peterson scored her first goal of the season and her career. Peterson dribbled through the Spartan defense and shot the ball past the goalie into the bottom left corner of the net. 
 
Nebraska had a 1-0 lead as it ended the first half, outshooting MSU by a 6-3 margin.
 
In the second half, Michigan State scored the equalizer in the 60th minute, but Nebraska bounced back to retake the lead. Freshman Abbey Schwarz followed in Peterson's footsteps and scored the first goal of her Husker career in the 67th minute. Freshman Sarah Weber headed a pass down the pitch, Peterson gathered and passed to Schwarz, who broke through the defense and found the back left corner of the net. 
 
Shortly after, the Spartans tied the game again with a goal in the 71st minute, sending the teams into two scoreless overtimes as the Huskers recorded their second double-overtime tie of the Big Ten season. 
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hauk, who secured one save on the night, was one of seven Huskers to play the full 110 minutes. Reagan Raabe, Kathleen Aitchison, Ashley Zugay, Gwen Lane, Grace Brown and Weber joined Hauk in playing the entire game. 
 
Overall, the Spartans topped the Huskers 14-13 in shots, but the Huskers took the lead on shots on goal 9-3. Nebraska's shots were distributed among eight different players with Schwarz leading the team with three. 
 
The Huskers return to action this weekend when they visit Northwestern (Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT).
