Huskers Head to Colbert Hills

The Nebraska women's golf team will make the short drive to Manhattan, Kansas to compete in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, Sept. 20-21.

The Huskers will be part of a nine-team contingent at Kansas State that includes both the Wildcats and their Big 12 counterparts from Kansas. Arkansas State, Incarnate Word, Sam Houston, Toledo, Tulane and Wichita State round out the tournament field.

Coach Lisa Johnson plans to take nine golfers to compete in two lineups at Kansas State. Kirsten Baete, who led Nebraska at the Wolverine Invitational, will lead NU's "A" lineup alongside Megan Whittaker, Michaela Vavrova, Vanessa Bouvet and freshman Lena Hassert.

NU's "B" lineup at Colbert Hills Golf Club in Manhattan will include Lindsey Thiele, Miu Takahashi, Andrea Velez and Nicole Hansen.

The Huskers will be making their first appearance at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational since the fall of 2015. Nebraska has been a frequent visitor historically to the tournament. They Huskers have been the runner-up at the tournament in six of their 10 previous appearances. NU tie Oral Roberts through 54 holes at Alvamar in Lawrence in 2008, before falling in a two-hole playoff to ORU. NU was also the team runner-up in 1993, 1995, 1996, 2003 and 2005. 

Stephanie Ruiz posted the best individual finish by a Husker in history at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower in 2005. Ruiz lost in a two-hole playoff to K-State's Helene Robert after both golfers closed at 215 (-1) through 54 holes. Ruiz fired a then-school-record 67 in the second round at Colbert Hills.
