Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska men's tennis team (1-11, 1-11 Big Ten) got its first win of the season defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-10, 4-8 Big Ten), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center.
To start off the day, the Huskers struggled in the doubles competition with both pairs of Brandon Perez/Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn/William Gleason falling 1-6 in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. With the Hawkeyes taking the doubles point, the No. 3 match between Albert Sprlak-Puk/Shunya Maruyama and Nikita Snezhko/Peter Alam was called at 3-3.
The Huskers bounced back in singles and won four matches to get the win. At No. 1 and No. 4, Perez and Lozano lost in straight sets before Nebraska took the following four. At No. 6, Wiedenhorn defeated Peter Alam 6-2, 6-1, for his third Big Ten conference win of the season. At No. 2, Maruyama continued his season success with his sixth win, defeating Will Davies 6-2, 6-3. Gleason, in the No. 3 position, took his match to a third-set tiebreak and won 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). At the deciding No. 5 match, Sprlak-Puk got the win for the Huskers, beating Jason Kerst 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
"I am happy for the guys to get the hard fought win," Head Coach Sean Maymi said. "It has been a tough season in many ways, but they did a great job fighting for every point today."
Up next, the Huskers will stay home to matchup with Northwestern on Friday at 5:00 p.m. CT at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln.
