Huskers Win Three Event Titles in Dual with Michigan

Lincoln, Neb -- The No. 17 Nebraska women's gymnastics team (3-2, 2-1 Big Ten) battled the Michigan Wolverines (5-0, 3-0 Big Ten) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Thursday night and Wolverines narrowly won the meet by a score of 197.075-196.975. 

The Huskers recorded nine season highs and won three event titles in the dual. Freshman Kathryn Thaler won her first event title of her collegiate career with a score of 9.90 on balance beam. Senior Sierra Hassel won the floor exercise title with a score of 9.925 and fellow senior Taylor Houchin took home the uneven bars title with a score of 9.90. 

Rotation One
Nebraska opened the meet on vault. Houchin led the way for NU in the first rotation, as she posted a score of 9.90. Junior Megan Verceles Carr set a career-high on vault with a score of 9.875, which sophomore Adnerys De Jesus matched. Junior Anika Dujakovich and freshman Kylie Piringer both added scores of 9.825 while Hassel anchored for the Huskers with a score of 9.75. 

Michigan started the meet on uneven bars, and finished the first rotation with a score of 49.225. The Wolverines were led by Natalie Wojcik, who posted a score of 9.875. Five Michigan gymnasts recorded scores of 9.80 or higher.

Nebraska led, 49.300-49.225, after the first rotation.

Rotation Two
On uneven bars, Houchin led the way for the Huskers once again with a score of 9.90, which won her the event title. De Jesus added a score of 9.85, while Verceles Carr finished a solid routine for a score of 9.825. Freshman Clara Colombo stuck the landing following her routine for a score of 9.775 and Thaler added a score of 9.75 for NU. Piringer recorded a score of 9.675, which was negated. Nebraska finished the rotation with a 49.100 team score.

On vault, Michigan's Abby Brenner scored a 9.95, which led her team and won her the even title, while Sierra Brooks followed closely behind her with a score of 9.90. The Wolverines finished the rotation with a score of 49.325 and pushed Michigan ahead, 98.550-98.400.

Rotation Three
On balance beam, Thaler led NU with a career-high score of 9.90. Hassel added a score of 9.875, while De Jesus and junior Makayla Curtis both recorded score of 9.80. Verceles Carr added a score of 9.775, while Houchin recorded a score of 9.725, which was negated. The Huskers finished the third rotation with a team score of 49.150.

For Michigan, Gabby Wilson and Brooks led the Wolverines, as both recorded scores of 9.875 on floor exercise. Three other gymnasts from Michigan recorded scores of 9.80 or higher, as the Wolverines finished the rotation with a 49.225. Michigan held onto the lead by a score of 147.775-147.550 heading into the final rotation. 

Rotation Four
The Huskers finished the meet on floor exercise. Hassel was stellar in the final rotation as she recorded a score of 9.925, which won her the event title. Houchin and Piringer added scores of 9.90, while De Jesus recorded a 9.875. Curtis and Dujakovich added scores of 9.825. NU finished the rotation with a team score of 49.425.

On balance beam, Michigan closed out the meet with a team score of 49.225. Wojcik and Brooks led the way for the Wolverines as both recorded scores of 9.875.

The Wolverines narrowly defeated Nebraska by a final score of 197.075-196.975.

Nebraska welcome the Maryland Terrapins to the Bob Devaney Sports Center for another Big Ten matchup on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.
