Huskers Take First at Big Fives

Toledo, Ohio -- The Nebraska women's gymnastics team took first place in the Big Five meet at Elevate the Stage in Toledo, Ohio on Friday evening with a team score of 196.750. NU finished ahead of Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa and Rutgers to pick up four Big Ten Conference victories. NU improves to 8-3 on the season with a 7-2 conference record.

Senior Taylor Houchin won the vault event title with a score of 9.95 and the all-around title with a score of 39.450 for Nebraska. Fellow senior Sierra Hassel took home a share of the floor exercise title with a score of 9.90.

Rotation One
Nebraska started the event on a bye on for the first rotation.

On vault, Iowa combined for a team score of 48.975. On uneven bars, Rutgers posted a team score of 48.850. Ohio State shared the lead with Illinois as both left the first rotation with team scores of 49.150 on balance beam and floor exercise respectively.

Rotation Two
The Huskers began their evening on floor exercise during the second rotation. Senior Sierra Hassel led NU with a score of 9.90 on the event. Sophomore Abby Johnston posted a score of 9.875, which is her career-high on floor. Fellow sophomore Adnerys De Jesus matched Johnston's score of 9.875, while junior Makayla Curtis recorded a score of 9.80. Senior Taylor Houchin recorded a score of 9.75, while freshman Kylie Piringer posted a floor score of 9.55, which was negated. Nebraska ended the second rotation with a team score of 49.200.

On vault, Illinois finished with a team score of 49.200, while Iowa competed on uneven bars for a score of 48.675. On balance beam, Rutgers finished with a score of 47.550 and Ohio State got the second rotation bye.

Rotation Three
In the third rotation, the Huskers found themselves on vault. Houchin led the way for Nebraska with a score of 9.95, followed by De Jesus who recorded a score of 9.90. Curtis added a score of 9.825 for NU, while Piringer scored a 9.775 on the event. Junior Megan Verceles Carr added a score of 9.75, while sophomore Kynsee Roby recorded a score of 9.10 due to a fall, which was negated. NU finished the third rotation with a team score of 49.200 on vault.

On uneven bars, Illinois recorded a team score of 49.225. Ohio State was on floor and finished with a team score of 49.150. Iowa was on beam and finished with a team score of 48.800.  Rutgers drew the third rotation bye. 

Rotation Four
Nebraska moved to uneven bars for the fourth rotation. Houchin and Freshman Clara Colombo led the Huskers with scores of 9.875, while De Jesus continued her solid evening with a score of 9.85 on bars. Freshman Kathryn Thaler and Verceles Carr both recorded scores of 9.825, while Piringer added a score of 9.725, which was negated. NU recorded a team score of 49.250 on uneven bars, which ties its season best.

On vault, Ohio State combined for a team score of 49.075. On balance beam, Illinois struggled due to two falls and recorded a team score of 48.675, and the Fighting Illini finished their night with a final score of 196.250. On floor exercise, Rutgers recorded a team score of 48.000. 

Rotation Five
The Huskers ended their night on balance beam. Houchin and Hassel led the Huskers with scores of 9.875 on beam, while Curtis added a score of 9.825. De Jesus finished her night with a score of 9.775 on beam, while Roby and Verceles Carr both recorded scores of 9.75. Nebraska finished the rotation with a team score of 49.100.

Nebraska took first place at the meet with a team score of 196.750. Illinois came in second with a final score of 196.550, followed by Ohio State in third at 196.475. Iowa finished its evening with a score of 195.725 and Rutgers finished in fifth with a team score of 193.625. 

Houchin won the all-around title with a score of 39.450, while De Jesus finished right behind her with a score of 39.400.

The Huskers will return to action on Saturday, March 7 when Nebraska takes on Missouri in a home dual at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN+.
