Houchin Wins Vault Title at Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 15 Nebraska women's gymnastics team (4-3, 3-2 Big Ten) took on the No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Maturi Pavilion.

Senior Taylor Houchin won the vault title with an excellent score of 9.95, while fellow senior Sierra Hassel placed on the podium on balance beam and floor exercise. Minnesota won the meet by a score of 197.400-195.700.

Rotation One
NU opened the meet on uneven bars. De Jesus led Nebraska with a score of 9.85 in the first rotation. Freshman Clara Colombo followed behind her with a score of 9.80, while junior Megan Verceles Carr recorded a score of 9.775. The Huskers finished the first rotation with a team score of 48.725. 

Minnesota started the meet on vault, and finished the first rotation with a score of 49.150. The Gophers were led by Ona Loper and Maddie Quarles, who both posted scores of 9.875. Minnesota led Nebraska by a score of 49.150-48.725 after the first rotation.

Rotation Two
On vault, Houchin won the event title with an excellent score of 9.95 during the second rotation. De Jesus followed behind her with a score of 9.85, while Verceles Carr posted a 9.80. Sophomore Kynsee Roby set her season-high on vault with a score of 9.75. NU finished the rotation with a 49.050 team score on vault.

On bars, Minnesota's Lexy Ramler posted a score of 9.975 which led her team. Loper and Tierre Sales both recorded scores of 9.90. Every Minnesota gymnast posted a score of 9.80 or higher. The Gophers finished the rotation with a score of 49.500. Minnesota held the lead over Nebraska by a score of 98.600-97.775 heading into the third rotation.

Rotation Three
On floor, senior Sierra Hassel led the way for Nebraska with a score of 9.875. De Jesus continued her solid evening with a score of 9.825. Junior Makayla Curtis and freshman Kylie Piringer followed closely with scores of 9.80. NU finished the rotation with a team score of 48.850 on floor. 

For Minnesota, Ramler once again led the Gophers with a score of 9.975 on beam. Three gymnasts from Minnesota recorded scores of 9.90 or higher, as the Gophers finished the rotation with a team score of 49.500. The Gophers held a lead of 148.150-146.625 heading into the final rotation. 

Rotation Four
The Huskers finished the meet on balance beam. Hassel led the Huskers with a score of 9.875 on the event. Roby and Houchin followed behind her with scores of 9.85, which is a season-high for Roby. Curtis and De Jesus added scores of 9.75, while Verceles Carr recorded a score of 9.70 which was negated. Nebraska finished the final rotation with a beam score of 49.075.

On floor, Loper recorded a score of 9.90 to take the floor title for Minnesota. Paige Williams added a score of 9.875 for Minnesota. The Gophers finished the rotation with a floor score of 49.250. Minnesota defeated Nebraska by a final score of 197.400-195.700.

De Jesus and Houchin competed in the all-around for Nebraska. For Minnesota, Ramler took home the all-around title with a score of 39.625.

The Huskers head to Toledo, Ohio to participate in the Big Five meet. The meet will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on FloGymnastics.com.
