Huskers Topple Thunderbirds On The Road

Cedar City, Utah -- The No. 15 Nebraska women's gymnastics team (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (0-1, 0-0 MRGC) at the America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah. The Huskers won the meet by a score of 196.375-195.275. 

The Huskers set or tied 14 career-high scores during the meet. Senior Taylor Houchin won the vault title with a score of 9.975 and a share of the bars title with freshman Clara Colombo with a score of 9.875. Senior Sierra Hassel won the beam title with a score of 9.925 and a share of the floor title with a score of 9.95.

Rotation One

NU opened the meet on uneven bars. Colombo and Houchin shared the event title, as both recorded scores of 9.875. Freshman Kathryn Thaler posted a score of 9.80, while junior Megan Verceles Carr and sophomore Adnerys De Jesus both added scores of 9.50. 

Southern Utah started the meet on vault, and finished the first rotation with a score of 49.075. The Thunderbirds were led by Rachel Smith and Madison McBride, who both posted scores of 9.85. SUU led Nebraska by a score of 49.075-48.550 after the first rotation.

Rotation Two
On vault, four Huskers set of tied their career highs. Houchin won the event title with a near perfect score of 9.975 during the second rotation. Junior Anika Dujakovich set her career-high with a score of 9.875, and Verceles Carr tied her career best with a score of 9.85. Sophomore Kaylee Quinn also set her career-high on the event with a 9.825. Junior Makayla Curtis and De Jesus both added scores of 9.70 for Nebraska. NU finished the rotation with a 49.225 team score on vault.

On bars, SUU's Shylen Murakami scored a 9.825, which led her team, while Hannah Nipp and Stephanie Trevort followed closely behind her with scores of 9.775. The Thunderbirds finished the rotation with a score of 48.000. Nebraska took the lead from SUU, 97.775-97.075

Rotation Three

On floor, Hassel led the way for Nebraska with a score of 9.95, which gave her a share of the event title. Freshman Kylie Piringer followed closely with a score of 9.90. Curtis and De Jesus both set career highs withscores of 9.875. Dujakovich also set a career high on floor of 9.85. 

For SUU, Karley McClain led the Thunderbirds with a score of 9.90 on beam. Three other gymnasts from Southern Utah recorded scores of 9.70 or higher, as the Thunderbirds finished the rotation with a 48.775. The Huskers held a lead of 147.225-145.850 heading into the final rotation. 

Rotation Four

The Huskers finished the meet on balance beam. Hassel again led the Huskers with a score of 9.925 in the final rotation. De Jesus added a score of 9.85, while Thaler recorded a 9.825 on the beam. Curtis finished her evening with a 9.80, while Verceles Carr added a score of 9.75. Nebraska finished the final rotation with a beam score of 49.150.

On floor, McClain recorded a score of 9.95 to take a share of the floor title. McBride added a score of 9.90 for SUU. The Thunderbirds finished the rotation with a floor score of 49.400. Nebraska defeated SUU by a final score of 196.375-195.275.

De Jesus and Houchin competed in the all-around for Nebraska. For SUU, McClain took home the all-around title with a score of 39.250.

Nebraska returns to the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Jan. 16 for a Big Ten matchup with Penn State. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
