Huskers Defeat Nittany Lions in Home Opener

Lincoln, Neb -- The No. 10 Nebraska women's gymnastics team (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-4, 0-1 Big Ten) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center by a score of 195.150-194.000 on Thursday night. 

Nebraska picked up its first Big Ten conference victory of the season, as the Huskers won at least a share of four event titles. Sophomore Adnerys De Jesus won her first all-around title of her career and a share of the vault title, which she shared with senior teammate Taylor Houchin. Houchin also won the uneven bars title. Senior Sierra Hassel won a share of the balance beam title as well. 

Rotation One
Nebraska opened the meet on vault, with De Jesus and Houchin setting the standard for the Huskers, as both shared the event title with scores of 9.90. Junior Anika Dujakovich added a score of 9.825 for NU, while freshman Kylie Piringer and junior Megan Verceles Carr both recorded scores of 9.775. Junior Makayla Curtis rounded out Nebraska with a score of 9.675.

Penn State started the meet on uneven bars, and finished the first rotation with a score of 48.975. The Nittany Lions were led by Alissa Bonsall and Madison McBride, who both posted a score of 9.825. Nebraska led PSU by a score of 49.175-48.975 after the first rotation.

Rotation Two
On uneven bars, Houchin led the way for the Huskers and won the event title with a score of 9.875. Freshman Clara Colombo stuck the landing following her routine for a score of 9.75 and De Jesus added another score of 9.75 for NU. Verceles Carr and freshman Kathryn Thaler recorded scores of 9.725 and 9.70, respectively. Nebraska finished the rotation with a 48.800 team score on bars.

On vault, PSU's Lauren Bridgens scored a 9.85, which led her team, while Kourtney Chinnery followed closely behind her with a score of 9.775. The Nittany Lions finished the rotation with a score of 48.825. Nebraska held the lead, 97.975-97.800

Rotation Three
On balance beam, Hassel led the Huskers with a score of 9.825 and Verceles Carr added a score of 9.725. Due to two Husker falls, Nebraska finished the third rotation with a team score of 47.775.

For Penn State, Bridgens led the Nittany Lions with a score of 9.925 on floor exercise to take the event title. Two other gymnasts from PSU recorded scores of 9.85, as the Nittany Lions finished the rotation with a 48.775. Penn State took the lead by a score of 146.575-145.750 heading into the final rotation. 

Rotation Four
The Huskers finished the meet on floor exercise. Houchin and Piringer were stellar in the final rotation as both recorded scores of 9.90. Dujakovich and Hassel finished their routines with scores of 9.875, while Curtis added a score of 9.85. De Jesus rounded out the Huskers with a score of 9.825. NU finished the rotation with a team score of 49.400.

Penn State finisined on the balance beam and Tess McCracken took a share of the event title with a score of 9.825. The Nittany Lions finished the rotation with a score of 47.425.

Nebraska defeated PSU by a final score of 195.150-194.000.

De Jesus won the all-around title with a score of 39.075. She finished ahead of Bridgens and Cassidy Rushlow of Penn State.

Nebraska heads to East Lansing, Mich. for another Big Ten matchup with Michigan State. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 and will be streamed live on BTN+.
