Flake Sets School Record as Huskers Fall to No. 1 West Virginia

The No. 9 Nebraska rifle team fell to top-ranked West Virginia at the Nebraska Rifle Range today. The match finished 4,719-4,642. Sophomore Elena Flake tied the school record in air rifle with a score of 597 but the Huskers couldn't overcome the Mountaineers.

NU was outscored by West Virginia in smallbore, 2,343-2,291. Elena Flake was out front for the Huskers with 578, followed by Samantha Peterson (574) and Kinga Aletto (570). Emily Cheramie and Bailey showed consistency with 569 scores.

In air rifle, the Mountaineers outscored the Huskers 2,376-2,351. Flake led the Huskers with 597. Her score also set the NU Rifle Range air rifle record, besting the mark of 596 set in 2004 by Misty Chanek and 2015 by Rachel Martin. Samantha Peterson followed Flake with a score of 586. Emiliy Cheramie and Macey Way both shot 584, and Bailey Powell (576) rounded out the Husker scores.

Morgan Phillips led the West Virginia smallbore effort with 589, followed by Akihito Shimizu's mark of 577. Milica Babic led the Mountaineers in air rifle with 598. Verena Zaisberger added 594.

The Huskers' next match is in two weeks, when the team travels to Colorado Springs to face UTEP, Kentucky and Air Force on Oct. 26.
