The Nebraska beach volleyball team began play at the Heineken Hawaii Invitational on Queen's Beach in Honolulu with three matches on Saturday.
The Huskers slipped 3-2 to Boise State and 5-0 to No. 9 California to begin the day. In the final match of the day, the Huskers fell 5-0 to No. 5 Hawaii. Nebraska is now 10-4 on the season and will play two more matches tomorrow as part of the tournament. The Huskers will play Hawaii first at 2 p.m. (CT), followed by either the third-place match or the championship match.
The Husker pairs that earned victories against Boise State were the No. 3 and No. 5 pairs. Mari Kurkova and Madi Kubik defeated Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald, 21-16, 11-21, 15-13, to get Nebraska on the board. Then at the No. 5 spot, Callie Schwarzenbach and Megan Miller bounced back from a 21-4 first-set defeat to win the last two sets, 21-14, 15-12 against Kenna Hanses and Maya Watkins.
Against Cal, the Huskers fell 5-0, but three Husker pairs took their matches to three sets and came up a few points short. Nicklin Hames and Lauren Stivrins fell 15-12 in set three, Kenzie Knuckles and Jazz Sweet dropped a 15-9 third set, and Schwarzenbach and Miller fell 16-14.
