The Nebraska rifle team will take to the range again this weekend, facing No. 7 Navy on Jan. 18 and No. 13 NC State on Jan. 20. Match action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. The match against NC State will serve as senior day for the Huskers, as well as the last home match of the season.
Last Time Out
The Huskers journeyed to West Point, N.Y. to compete against Army on Jan. 12 and Coast Guard on Jan. 13. NU defeated Army 4,660-4,652. Samantha Peterson recorded 581 to lead the team in smallbore. The Huskers recorded a team smallbore score of 2,314. Peterson was out front again in air rifle 589, contributing to a team score of 2,346. Army recorded a score of 2,302 in smallbore and 2,350 in air rifle.
Nebraska showed consistency in the second day when they recorded a second team aggregate score of 4,660 against Coast Guard (4,556). Emily Cheramie paced NU with 585 in smallbore, contributing to a team score of 2,313. Maddie Korthas led the field in air rifle with a career-high score of 592, playing a key role in Nebraska’s air rifle effort (2,347). Coast Guard recorded overall team scores of 2,239 and 2,317 in smallbore and air rifle, respectively.
Scouting Navy
The seventh-ranked Navy rifle team holds a 9-4 record this season. All four of the losses are against top-five teams, including second-ranked TCU. Navy’s most recent outing was a loss to fourth-ranked Kentucky, 4,672-4,681. Nebraska holds a 16-4 record against Navy dating back to 2000 and looks to add another victory. The shooter to watch for Navy is junior Kestrel Kuhne, who routinely leads the Midshipmen in both disciplines and has posted a score of 595 twice this season.
Scouting NC State
The No. 13 NC State Wolfpack has recorded three wins and four losses so far this season. The team’s most recent outing was a loss against top-ranked West Virginia, 4,638-4,690. Nebraska holds a 22-1 all-time record against the Wolfpack, dating back to 2007. The shooter to watch for NC State is senior Claire Spina, who frequently leads the team in both disciplines.
Meet the Seniors
Nina Radulovic hails from Belgrade, Serbia and is an established leader on the team. She holds a career average of 574.48 in smallbore and 584.79 in air rifle after appearing in 48 matches in the last four seasons.
Hannah Virga came to Nebraska from Chandler, Ariz. Virga is currently tied for the highest recorded air rifle score in Nebraska history (597). She holds career averages of 569.86 in smallbore and 584.06 in air rifle after appearing in 36 matches.
Rachel Yager traveled to Nebraska from Bozeman, Mont. and has been a steady contributor since her arrival. Yager recorded career averages of 567.42 in smallbore and 577.23 in air rifle. She saw match action in 32 matches since her freshman year.
