Nebraska Notes and Quotes: at No. 25 Indiana

Postgame Notes
*-Nebraska improved to 7-12 all-time against Indiana and has won three straight against the Hoosiers dating back to the 2016-17 season.
*-Nebraska picked up its first win over a ranked opponent this season and first on the road since downing No. 16 Indiana during the  2016-17 season.
*-Nebraska improves to 3-4 all-time vs. teams ranked No. 25 in the AP poll. It marks the second time in nine days that NU has played the No. 25 team, as the Huskers lost to No. 25 Iowa on Jan. 6.
*-The 15-point margin of victory marked only the sixth time NU has won a road game against a ranked team by double figures, and was NU’s largest road margin vs. a ranked team since an 80-59 win at No. 23 Kansas State on Feb. 13, 1993.
*-Nebraska has won at least one game against a ranked team in five of the last six seasons and at least one road game vs. a ranked opponent in three of the last four years.
*-Nebraska held Indiana to 51 points, its lowest total of the season (63 vs. Michigan). NU also held Indiana it 36.5 percent shooting (previous low .391 at Duke). Only two of Indiana’s 17 opponents have held the Hoosiers under 40 percent shooting, as IU entered the contest shooting a Big Ten best 51.8 percent.
*-Indiana becomes the seventh team NU has held to a season low in points this season.
*-The win snapped Indiana’s 10-game home winning streak and was the Hoosiers’ first home loss of the year.
*-Glynn Watson Jr. finished with 15 points, moving into 15th on Nebraska’s career scoring list, as he passed Chuck Jura (1,255) and Stuart Lantz (1,269). Watson now has 1270 career points. Watson also had two steals to move into a tie with Brian Carr (159) for sixth place on NU’s steals chart.  
*-Isaac Copeland Jr. finished with 14 points, the 14th time this year he’s been in double figures and the 71st of his career.
*-Tanner Borchardt, who is scheduled to have a root canal on Tuesday, sparked the Huskers off the bench with seven points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.
*-James Palmer Jr. played one of best all-around games of the year with 11 points while tying or setting season bests in both rebounds (nine) and assists (seven).
*-Nebraska’s 11-0 run in the first half was the Huskers’ 18th double-figure run this season.

Nebraska Head Coach Tim Miles 

Q. What was working defensively tonight?
TIM MILES: I thought we did a good job getting to Romeo and Juwan, first of all. Making them play in a crowd. I thought we had to switch defenses on and off. Coach Miller can really get you carved up when they get in a rhythm. We kept them out of transition for the most part. Getting off to an early lead was probably most important. Getting the crowd out of the game. The way you win big road games, you play from the front, and just hang on. We were able to stretch a little bit today. I thought our guys did a very good job with the game plan from the get go.

Q. How do you feel like you guys handled not scoring for eight minutes?
TIM MILES: You could see it affected us. At halftime I said, ‘you know, it’s okay to win with defense’. We got off to such a hot start, there is a return to the mean. I think the turnovers bothered me more than the missed open shots. A couple of bad shots we can do on occasion. At the same time, I thought the guys handled it okay. I don’t know if there is a crisis of confidence with our guys, but this sure is a confidence builder.

Q. Indiana has Romeo and Juwan, but you look outside of them there isn’t much perimeter shooting, so how much did that effect your defensive game plan and how you guarded those two?
TIM MILES: I think there are capable guys out there. But they are young. You look at guys and when you haven’t quite proven it on the big stage yet sometimes it’s just not there. There is a lot of threats on that floor.

Q. You were switching one through four, what went into that decision to employ that?
TIM MILES: It depends on how we feel on the glass and in the post. It’s based off if we need to double or not. If we switch this, or how far down do we go in the game plan. I felt like if we were going to switch, we just needed to make sure to keep Justin (Smith) off the glass. I thought we did okay with that.
