Lincoln, Neb. -- Junior Alvaro Moreno Lozano and freshman Victor Moreno Lozano will head to Minneapolis this weekend to compete at the Gopher Invitational. The tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota will run from Nov. 2-4.
Assistant Coach Tom Boysen, who will travel with the Moreno brothers, commented on his expectations for the Huskers' last bit of action in the fall.
"This weekend will be a good opportunity for Victor and Alvaro to get a few more highly competitive matches under their belts," Boysen said. "The Gopher Invitational attracts some good players from several highly-ranked teams. Our players have competed and trained hard this fall, and we will use this final weekend to keep learning and getting better."
The tournament starts Friday morning with rounds of singles and doubles -- first serve is at 9 a.m. CT. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8 a.m. CT both days. Brackets will be posted as soon as available.
Nebraska is one of 11 schools participating in the tournament, joining Dartmouth, Denver, DePaul, Drake, Marquette, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Utah, and Wisconsin.
NU returns to the Gopher Invite after six years, as the Huskers last competed in the event in 2012-13. Dusty Boyer, a four-year Husker letterwinner and three-time All-Big Ten honoree, led Nebraska to a 10-15 spring campaign as a freshman that season.
Nebraska comes off a successful doubles run at the Big Ten Individual Championships last weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. Junior Chris Dean and sophomore Isaac Nortey reached the Flight B championship match after knocking off Alan Sweet/Daniel Nuzhny (Wisconsin), 8-7 (2) and Patrick Fletchall/Pyam Ahmadi (Indiana), 8-6. Nortey advanced to a 4-2 doubles record on the fall season, while Dean improved to 2-5.
