Lincoln, Neb. – The Red Team scored one run in each of the last three innings on its way to a 3-0 win over the White Team during Game 1 of the Red-White Series at Hawks Field on Friday evening.
In a game that lasted six innings and included 11-batter lineups, five Red Team pitchers combined to pitch a shutout. Max Schreiber (2.0 innings), Ethan Frazier (1.0), Tyler Martin (1.0), Caleb Feekin (1.0) and Trey Kissack (1.0) each pitched for the Red Team.
After a scoreless first three innings for both teams, freshman Spencer Schwellenbach blasted a two-out solo home run to center field to give the Red Team a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Schwellenbach, a Saginaw, Mich., native, was drafted in the 34th round in 2018 to the Cleveland Indians, but came to Nebraska as part of the Huskers’ nationally ranked recruiting class.
In the fifth inning, the Red team tacked on another run when Kennet Sorenson singled before rounding the bases on Blake Peterson’s hit. Jaxon Hallmark doubled in the leadoff spot in the sixth and scored later in the inning.
The White Team pitched Gareth Stroh (2.0 innings), Kyle Perry (2.0) and Paul Tillotson (2.0). Stroh, a left-handed senior who transferred from Purdue, held the Red Team scoreless in his outing. At the plate, Keegan Watson managed the White Team’s lone hit with his single in the fifth.
The White Team drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the sixth, bringing the tying run to the plate. But a strikeout followed by a double play ended the game.
