Singles Success Highlights Day Two in Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. – Day two of the Minnesota Invitational started off at 9 a.m. with doubles competition before shifting over to singles in the afternoon. Each of NU’s three doubles pairs played back-to-back matches at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The junior duo of Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad moved to 4-0 on the weekend with two victories this morning. They defeated Haleas/Palumbo (Drake) 6-3 and Kreinis/Zhang (MN) 6-1. Reifeis and Haakenstad will play two more matches tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m. as they look to continue their dominance in doubles play.

After going 1-1 on day one of doubles matches, freshman Jessica Aragon and senior Vasanti Shinde matched that mark on Saturday. They began the morning by beating Proudfoot/Caro (UNI) 6-3 before falling 6-2 to Hart/Emme (MN). Aragon/Shinde resume doubles action at 9 a.m. tomorrow when they take on Espinola/Gibbens (ISU).

The third doubles pair, Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould, moved to 2-2 in doubles play after the first two days. The senior duo snuck out a 7-6 victory over Cepelyte/Rice (ARK) in a thriller before falling 6-3 to Cancini/Bonnadonna (ISU) at 10 a.m. They take on Phillips/Fain (UNI) when doubles play picks back up at 9 a.m. Sunday.

In singles play, Worley, Haakenstad, Reifeis, Shinde and Aragon all continued competing in their respective flights. Vasanti Shinde has been competing in Flight A this weekend. After winning her quarterfinal match yesterday, she fell 6-2, 6-3 to Maty Cancini (ISU) in the semifinals. Shinde will play in the Flight A third-place match tomorrow morning against Agne Cepelyte (ARK).

Reifeis, who stayed in the Singles Gold bracket for Flight B, won her semifinal match 6-3, 6-5 over Thea Rice (ARK). She plays in the Flight B Gold championship tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. Haakenstad fell to the Bronze bracket in Flight B after losing her quarterfinal match yesterday. However, she responded nicely by defeating Natalie Kmoskova (USD) 6-2, 6-2. Haakenstad will play in the Bronze final tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Caitlyn Merzbacher (MN).

Jessica Aragon advanced to the Flight D championship after defeating Camila Vargas Gomez (MN) 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals today. She will play Minnesota’s River Hart tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Emma Worley, who won her quarterfinal match in Flight E on Friday, fell in the semifinals to Kalyssa Hall (MN) 6-1, 6-1. Her third-place match againstIsabella Lambert (MN) begins tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.

Both Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould won singles matches in the Flight F, round-robin competition. Cozac beat Masha Lobanova (UND) 6-2, 6-0 and Gould came from behind to defeat Caroline Gibbens (ISU) 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. They will each have three more singles matches tomorrow.

Doubles matches begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and select matches can be streamed live from the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center at the following link. Singles play will begin shortly after doubles play commences.
