Carter's Hat Trick Helps NU Top Hoosiers in OT

Lincoln, Neb. – After a three-hour 26-minute weather delay, the Nebraska soccer team (6-3-2, 2-0-1 Big Ten) overcame a 3-1 deficit against Indiana to emerge with a 4-3 overtime win over the Hoosiers on a rainy Thursday night at Hibner Stadium.

Nebraska, playing in its third straight overtime game, extends its unbeaten streak to four consecutive games. The unbeaten streak includes three wins and a tie.

Lightning delayed the teams from warming up before the game, but it was senior Faith Carter who shocked the Hoosiers during the game with the 34th hat trick in program history. Carter scored each of Nebraska’s last three goals of the game to hand Indiana its first loss of Big Ten play after a 2-0 start. The Hoosiers fall to 6-2-2 overall.

Indiana took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Abby Allen scored from short range in the 24th minute. In a second-half scoring barrage, the two teams combined for five goals in a span of 30 minutes. Meg Brandt tied the game at 1-1 with her goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from Theresa Pujado.

The Hoosiers struck in the 65th and 75th minutes to build a 3-1 advantage over the Big Red. Less than 30 seconds after Indiana’s Melanie Forbes scored to give IU a two-goal advantage, Carter found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 3-2 with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Carter scored her second goal of the night, the equalizer, in the 83rd minute off an assist from Savanah Uveges. Neither team scored in the final seven minutes to send the game into overtime. Less than a minute into extra time, Carter headed in her third goal of the night and team-high third game-winner of the season off a cross from Brandt.

Junior goalkeeper Aubrei Corder, who played all 91 minutes, collected one save and moved into a tie for fourth on Nebraska’s career saves list with Jamie Klages (156).

The Huskers host Purdue on Sunday at Hibner Stadium, starting at 1:05 p.m. (CT) on BTN Plus. It is “Pack the House” at Hibner Stadium, which features $1 general admission tickets in addition to free popcorn and Pepsi 12-pack vouches for the first 500 fans. Fans can also interact with animals from the Lincoln Children’s Zoo before the game as part of “Zoo Day.”
