Late Cougar Goals Doom Huskers in 2-1 Loss

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska soccer team (3-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season by a 2-1 margin to No. 18 Washington State at Hibner Stadium on Friday night.

NU led 1-0 after senior Savanah Uveges scored her team-high third goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Washington State committed a foul in the box, which gave Uveges a penalty kick that she converted. She also scored on a penalty kick in Nebraska’s last outing against Oregon State on Sunday.

The Huskers, who controlled possession for most of the game, outshot the Cougars by a 7-2 margin in the first half and went into intermission with a 1-0 lead. However, Washington State struck twice in a span of 10 minutes in the second half to take the lead for good.

In the 55th minute, Elyse Bennett netted the equalizer. In the 65th minute, Alysha Overland scored off an assist from Brianna Alger after a Cougar steal.

Aubrei Corder, Sinclaire Miramontez, Caroline Buelt and Brenna Ochoa each played the full 90 minutes for the Big Red. Corder, a junior goalkeeper, earned two saves.

Washington State, a 2017 NCAA Tournament qualifier, improves to 4-0 this season.

The Huskers travel to Waco, Texas to battle the Baylor Bears on Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, starting at 7 p.m. (CT). The game will be streamed on Baylor’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/BaylorFutbol.
