Alvarado Shines as NU Sweeps Wolf Pack

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (20-22) completed a weekend sweep against Nevada with its 12-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Senior right-hander Luis Alvarado, who made his 11th start of the season, allowed only two hits in 8.0 innings of work. After not allowing a hit in the first 5.0 innings, the leadoff batter in the sixth hit a single. The lone run Alvarado gave up was a solo home run in the seventh inning. He recorded three strikeouts and didn’t walk any batters.

Senior Scott Schreiber led the Husker offense with a 3-for-6 performance, which included a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. The home run marked his 16th of the season, matching his single-season total from 2016. It was the 42nd home run of his career, which puts him in a tie for fifth in career home runs in school history with Steve Stanicek.

In the bottom of the first, Mojo Hagge drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Jesse Wilkening drew a one-out walk. Luke Roskam’s RBI double scored one run. Gunner Hellstrom’s sacrifice fly brought in Wilkening to give NU a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.

Zac Luckey singled in the leadoff spot in the second inning. Alex Henwood drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Hagge singled up the middle to drive in one run. In the following at-bat, with two runners on, Schreiber launched a home run to right field and give Nebraska a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Joe Acker laced an RBI single that scored Luckey. The run extended the Husker lead to 7-0. In the sixth, Schreiber hit a leadoff double and then later in the inning scored on Gunner Hellstrom’s RBI single.

Nevada scored one run in the top of the seventh when Joshua Zamora homered, but NU responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Henwood hit a leadoff single and advanced to second when Acker walked. Hagge walked to load the bases before the first out of the inning was recorded. One run scored when Wilkening hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Roskam’s walk loaded the bases again. Hellstrom was hit-by-pitch, which added a run for the Big Red. Jaxon Hallmark drove in two runs with a single to right field.

The Wolf Pack scored four runs in the top of the ninth after both teams played a scoreless eighth inning.

The Huskers resume Big Ten play at home next weekend when they host Maryland for a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 6:35 p.m. (CT).
