Throwers Lead Huskers in Outdoor Season Opener

Tempe, Ariz. - The Nebraska track and field team began the outdoor season with the first day of action at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational on Friday night at Sun Angel Stadium. 

Brittni Wolczyk (women's javelin) and Pat Letz (3,000m steeplechase) won event titles, while All-Americans Nick Percy (men's hammer throw) and Cody Walton (men's javelin) took runner-up honors to highlight the first day of competition. The Nebraska men lead the competition with 43 points, while the Husker women are tied with Arizona State for first place with 22 points. 

Wolczyk picked up an event title for the Huskers on Friday, as she won the javelin with a mark of 170-1 (51.86m). Chase Wolinski finished third as she bested her PR by nearly five feet with a throw of 162-4 (49.48m), as she moved into eighth on the NU all-time list. Sydney Otto finished fourth with a throw of 158-6 (48.32).

Letz also earned an event title, as he won the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:23.59.

Percy took second place in his first event of the outdoor season, the hammer throw. NU's school record holder recorded a throw of 215-3 (65.62m) on his fourth attempt to take runner-up honors. Freshman Edward Jeans placed fourth in the hammer throw and entered the Nebraska all-time top-10, posting a mark of 202-9 (61.80), good for eighth all-time at NU.

Walton placed second in the javelin, as the senior threw for a distance of 220-3 (67.14m) on his sixth and final attempt. The Huskers took three of the top-five spots in the men's javelin, as freshman Eric Garner (fourth) recorded a distance of 198-5 (60.48m) in his first collegiate competition, while sophomore Zach Podraza (fifth) posted a PR throw of 193.5 (58.96m).

Both Alice Akers and Kristina Insingo set PRs in the hammer throw, as Akers recorded a throw of 175-9 (53.58m), while Insingo threw for a distance of 163-8 (49.90m).

Action at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational continues on Saturday, with the rest of the field events beginning at 3:30 p.m. Running events get underway at 7:20 p.m.
