Lawrence, Kan.?-??The Nebraska softball team (15-7) completed a weekend sweep at the Jayhawk Invitational after defeating host team Kansas (17-5) by a score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon in its second game of the day. Nebraska went 4-0 over the weekend, defeating Green Bay, Northern Iowa, Tulsa and Kansas. NU was originally scheduled to play a fifth game on Sunday against UMKC, but that game has been cancelled due to weather.?
Kaylan Jablonski picked up her eighth win of the season. She pitched a complete seven inning game and gave up just four hits and one run. She also had five strikeouts. The Huskers handed Brynn Minor her first loss of the season. She dropped to 4-1, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up five runs off seven hits. She also had two walks and two strikeouts.
On offense, Ally Riley led the Huskers, going 2-for-3, with an RBI. Jablonski also helped offensively, finishing 1-for-3, with one homer, one RBI, one walk and two runs. Alyvia Simmons, Madi Unzicker, Laura Barrow and Gina Metzler each had one hit for NU as well.?
The Huskers scored in the top of the first after Jablonski drew a two-out walk and Madi Unzicker doubled to score one run.?
The Jayhawks responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring one run.?A leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position with one out and a single tied the game.
In the second, Kansas hit a leadoff triple, but Jablonski retired the next three batters to leave her stranded and end the inning.?
In the top of the fifth, the Huskers regained the lead.?Metzler drew a one-out walk and Riley singled down the left side to put two runners on with one out. Bree Boruff pinch ran for Riley. A few batters later, Simmons doubled to center?field to score two more runs. Simmons also advanced to third on the throw home. The Jayhawks got out of the inning with a groundout, but not before the Huskers took a 3-1 lead.?
Nebraska extended its lead in the top of the sixth after Jablonski hit a leadoff home run to left field. A few batters later, Barrow hit a two-out single and Metzler was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Riley singled to score Barrow and give the Huskers a 5-1 lead. Metzler advanced to third on the throw, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Riley stole second and Rylie Unzicker pinch ran for her. Alexis Perry drew a walk to load the bases for the top of the Husker order, but a grounder got the Jayhawks out of the inning.
The Huskers are back in action on Tuesday for a game in Omaha against UNO, beginning at 5 p.m. NU then returns home on Wednesday to play a doubleheader against South Dakota State, beginning a 3 p.m.
