Huskers Crush Cal Poly, 22-3

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (8-6) scored 13 runs in the sixth inning en route to a 22-3 win over Cal Poly in the first game of a doubleheader at Hawks Field on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the 13-run sixth inning, NU scored four runs in the first and five runs in the second frame. The Huskers hammered 17 hits, and came one run shy of tying the Hawks Field record of 23 runs, set in 2002 against Nebraska-Kearney.

Junior lefty Nate Fisher made his third start of the season and earned the win in 5.0 innings of work, giving up one run and struck out four. Andrew Abrahamowicz (2.0 innings) and Mitch Steinhoff (2.0) each made appearances out of the bullpen.

After allowing one run in the top of the first, NU responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and five runs in the second inning to build a 9-1 lead. The Huskers roped three doubles in the opening frame after Mojo Hagge reached on an error in the leadoff spot. Zac Repinski drove in Hagge with a double before Angelo Altavilla drove in Repinski with his double. Scott Schreiber’s single advanced Altavilla to third base. Jesse Wilkening drove in Altavilla when he reached on a fielder’s choice. Wilkening scored on Luke Roskam’s RBI double.

In the second inning, Nebraska scored five runs on three hits and one error. During the action-packed sixth inning, Nebraska scored 13 runs on five hits and no errors. Cal Poly allowed seven walks during the inning. Brison Cronenbold smashed his first home run of the season during the sixth frame.

The Huskers and Mustangs started the second game of their Saturday doubleheader at 4:35 p.m.
