Nathan Gerry can add one more accomplishent to his résumé in his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles: Super Bowl Champion.
The former Blackshirt and fifth-round draft pick played on special teams for the Eagles in their 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII on Sunday.
Gerry began the season on the Eagles' practice squad, but was called up to the active roster midway through the year and was a contributor mostly on special teams, but also played linebacker for the Eagles throughout the rest of the regular season and playoff run.
This season marks the fourth year in a row that the Super Bowl champion featured a former Husker on its roster, and the 25th year in a row that a former Husker participated in the Super Bowl.
Former Husker running back Rex Burkhead also played in the game and helped the Patriots compile a total of 613 yards of offense, as he racked up 64 total yards on four touches. Burkhead's career-long 46-yard reception in the second quarter was New England's second-longest play of the game, and helped lead to a Patriot field goal. Burkhead was also the feature back on a fourth-quarter drive that ended with a Rob Gronkowski touchdown reception to give New England a 33-32 lead with 9:26 left in the game.
Defensive linemen Vincent Valentine was also on New England's roster, but did not participate in a game this season as he was on injured reserve. Valentine played in New England's Super Bowl LI win over the Atlanta Falcons last season.
With the Super Bowl appearances by Gerry, Burkhead and Valentine, Nebraska has had 60 former Huskers make a total of 76 appearances in the Super Bowl dating back to Super Bowl II following the 1967 season.
