Huskers Hosts Akron on Senior Day

The No. 10 Nebraska rifle team will host the No. 15 Akron Zips this Saturday (Feb. 3) in the Huskers’ final home match of the season. The match will also serve as Senior Day for Nebraska, honoring senior Dacotah Faught.

Senior Spotlight

Dacotah Faught will draw attention as the lone senior on the team as NU returns to the Nebraska Rifle Range for Senior Day. Faught has been a fundamental part of the Huskers’ success this season and currently holds the highest single and average air rifle scores on the team. A 596 against Kentucky was enough to tie her career-high score and lead the 2017-18 Huskers. Faught will continue to be counted on as the season winds down.

Last Time Out

Nebraska is coming off a bye weekend after a very successful trip to Annapolis, Md. The Huskers competed against Navy first, using a season-high team aggregate score to defeat the Midshipmen 4,682-4,655. The next day Nebraska squared off against NC State, surviving a strong Wolfpack air rifle performance to win 4,670-4,655. Dacotah Faught twice led the Huskers in air rifle, firing 595 and 593. Hannah Virga owned smallbore against Navy, firing a team-high 586. Samantha Peterson and Emily Cheramie both notched scores of 583 in smallbore to lead NU against NC State.

Scouting the Zips

The Huskers hold an all-time record of 9-0 against Akron dating back to 2001 and will look to continue the trend. Akron has won one of their last three matches, adding a victory over Morehead State to their record on Jan. 20 but losing to Army and West Virginia. Shooters to watch include freshman Wyatt Openshaw and junior Caleb Lloyd. Openshaw and Lloyd have battled for the top in the last two matches with aggregate scores never more than two points apart. Openshaw led the field against Morehead State with an overall score of 1,163.

Huskers Ranked No. 10

Despite a season-high team score and two victories in their most recent outing, Nebraska fell two spots in this week’s rankings. The Huskers have been in the top ten since October. West Virginia occupies the top spot, followed by TCU, Kentucky and Murray State. Alaska rounds out the top five.
