Huskers Defeat Penn State in Season Opener

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Nebraska women’s gymnastics team defeated Penn State 195.55-195.05 in the Huskers’ 2018 season opener in University Park, Pa. on Saturday.

The Huskers start the 2018 campaign 1-0 (1-0 Big Ten) while Penn State falls to 1-1 (0-1 Big Ten). On the day, the Huskers earned two event titles as Grace Williams won the balance beam with a score of 9.925, while Sienna Crouse won the vault with a score of 9.95.

“We had a good outcome today and now we know where we are and what we need to work on. It was a slow start but once we got going we did well, including a great finish on beam that we needed. I’m proud of the gymnasts and their performance today,” head coach Dan Kendig said.

Rotation One

NU started off the meet on uneven bars, and scored a 48.375 despite a fall. Sophomore Taylor Houchin and last year’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year led the Huskers with a third-place tie and a score of 9.875. Freshman Kynsee Roby hit a 9.85 in her collegiate debut and tied for fifth place. All-arounders Megan Schweihofer and Abbie Epperson hit a 9.825 and 9.800 respectively, a career-high vault performance for Epperson. Junior Catelyn Orel returned to action after redshirting the 2017 season due to injury and scored a 9.025 while Danielle Breen hit a 8.675 despite a fall.

Penn State hit a 49.075 as a team and Nittaly Lions Alissa Bonsall and Briannah Tsang finished tied for first with a score of 9.90, respectively.

Rotation Two

The Huskers swept the top three positions on vault with Sienna Crouse winning the event title with a career-high 9.95 performance. Schweihofer tied her career high with a 9.990 and Epperson rounded out the trio with a 9.875 performance. Freshman Anika Dujakovich posted a career-debut score of 9.825 while Karley Hutchinson debuted with a 9.775. Williams rounded out the lineup with a 9.70.

Through two rotations, Penn State led the Huskers 98.40-97.70. Penn State was led by Kourtney Chinnery with a score of 9.850.

Rotation Three

The Huskers moved to floor for the third rotation and tied up the team score at 146.50. NU was led by Schweihofer who finished tied for second with a score of 9.825. Williams added a score of 9.775 while Epperson and sophomore Sierra Hassel tied for fifth with a career-high score of 9.75 respectively. Dujakovich hit a debut 9.70. Crouse rounded out the group with a 9.675.

Penn State’s Tsang won the event title with a 9.90 on her way to the all-around title.

Rotation Four

After being down the last three rotations, Nebraska finished out on beam and came back to take the team victory from Penn State 195.55-195.05. The Huskers were led by Williams with a 9.925 event-winning score, while freshman Kynsee Roby debuted with a 9.825 and tied for second place with Schweihofer, also with an 9.825. Epperson added a 9.80 on the day while Hassel posted a 9.725.

Penn State’s Mason Hosek and Tsang tied for fourth on beam with a score of 9.80.

The Huskers will open their home season on Saturday Jan. 20 against Rutgers in a double-dual with Nebraska men’s gymnastics, who will face Ohio State. The meet will take place at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 7 p.m. and will also serve as the Pepsi Pack-the-House night. Season tickets are $25 for adults, $13 for seniors and youth, and all meets are free to UNL students and kids aged six and under.
