Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 22 Nebraska soccer team (5-2-0) fell to San Diego State, 2-1, with 19 seconds left in double overtime at Hibner Stadium on Friday night.
The Huskers struck first when sophomore Meg Brandt scored in the 44th minute. The goal marked Brandt’s second of the season, which gave NU a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Aztecs responded in the 49th minute when Mia Root scored off an assist from Sarah Broacha. The score remained tied at the end of 90 minutes and through the first overtime period. With time winding down in the second overtime, Rachel Speros scored the game winner off an assist from Aliyah Utush.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aubrei Corder collected two saves in her longest outing of the season. On the offensive end, NU outshot SDSU, 17-8, and landed five shots on goal. Individually, Brandt had four shots on goal, while Sinclaire Miramontez had one. Senior Haley Hanson took four shots.
The Huskers complete their non-conference home stand at Hibner Stadium on Sunday against Pittsburgh at 1:05 p.m. (CT). Prior to the match, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo will be set up in the courtyard with child-friendly animals as part of “Zoo Day.”
