Game Notes

Nebraska won its sixth straight game overall and its fourth straight Big Ten game...the Huskers also won their fourth straight road game after opening the year 0-7 in true road games...Kaylan Jablonski won her fifth straight decisison and had a season high eight strikeouts, the most by a Husker pitcher this season...MJ Knighten and Alyvia Simmons combined for three doubles and a home run, with each player totaling two extra-base hits.

Piscataway, N.J. - The Nebraska softball team pushed its winning streak to six straight games by defeating Rutgers, 7-4, in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at the RU Softball Complex.

Sophomore Alyvia Simmons and senior MJ Knighten - the top two hitters in the Husker lineup - powered the Nebraska offense, while junior right-hander Kaylan Jablonski continued her dominance in the circle. Simmons and Knighten combined for five hits, three doubles, one homer, five runs and three RBIs, with Simmons going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs and Knighten finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBIs.

In the circle, Jablonski (8-10) won her fifth straight decision while tossing her third complete game of the season. She fired a four-hitter, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out a season-high eight batters.

With its sixth straight win, Nebraska improved to 14-20 and moved to 4-3 in Big Ten play. Rutgers fell to 10-25 with the loss and dropped to 1-6 in league play. Shayla Sweeney (8-10) took the loss, allowing seven runs in 5.1 innings, although only three runs were earned.

Nebraska jumped out to a 1-0 lead two batters into the game on back-to-back doubles from Simmons and Knighten. Freshman Tristen Edwards then walked before a fielder's choice put Huskers on first and third with one out. But Nebraska had to settle for just one run as a double play ended the inning.

Simmons and Knighten struck again in the top of the third inning. Simmons began the frame with a single before Knighten won a nine-pitch at bat with a two-run homer to left field that stretched the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, an error and a walk gave Rutgers runners on first and second with no outs before Anyssa Iliopoulus tied the game with a three-run homer to right center.

The game was still tied in the top of the fifth when Nebraska took advantage of a pair of errors to plate four runs. The Huskers loaded the bases with one out on a single from sophomore Bri Cassidy, a Rutgers error and a walk to Edwards. Jablonski then helped herself and gave Nebraska a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly to right. Knighten smartly moved from second to third on the play to put runners at first and third. Edwards then attempted to steal second and Rutgers cut off the throw and tried to get Knighten attempting to steal home, but the return throw to the plate was wild allowing Knighten to score the second run of the inning. Edwards capped the inning by coming home on an RBI single from senior Cassie McClure to make it a 7-3 Husker lead.

Rutgers used an error to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh before Jablonski closed out her complete game.

Nebraska will look for a sweep in game two of the doubleheader.
