Huskers Fall to No. 9 Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team battled another tough Big Ten opponent Sunday. The Huskers fell 7-0 to No. 9 Michigan and move to 18-7 on the season (5-6 in the Big Ten).

Huskers Mary Hanna and Paula Del Cueto Castillo once again competed out of the No. 1 doubles position. The duo battled against No. 7 Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian of Michigan. Only able to secure three points, Hanna and Del Cueto Castillo fell to the Wolverines 6-3. 

At No. 2 doubles, Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad were defeated in a close 6-4 decision by Chiara Lommer and Brienne Minor. This victory by nationally ranked Michigan put UM up on the dual 1-0.

Singles action pushed into the morning with full force as the Nebraska roster was set to face two nationally ranked singles competitors. First to fall to the Wolverines was Reifies, playing out of the No. 1 singles position. The freshman fell to No. 28 Fahey in 6-1, 6-1 sets.

Fellow freshman Jeannie Lozowski also fell to her Big Ten opponent, Lommer. Lommer was able to push to 6-0, 6-1 over Lozowski to bring the match to 3-0 for the Wolverines.

Clinching the match and singles points for Michigan was Najarian at No. 3 sinlges. Senior Lisa Andersson fought hard but was unable to best her opponent, resulting in a 6-1, 6-1 final decision.

Singles matches continued into the morning, the Wolverines pushing to a 7-0 victory.

The Nebraska women’s tennis team will be back in action one last time next weekend as they visit the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa. Tennis action is scheduled to begin at noon, beginning with doubles play.
