Lincoln – The Nebraska women’s tennis team fought valiantly but fell to No. 3 Ohio State on Sunday with a 7-0 final score going to the Buckeyes.
All seniors, including those on the roster for Ohio State, Lisa Andersson and Mary Hanna were celebrated prior to the beginning of doubles competition. The duo has posted over 200 wins in their collegiate career with the Huskers. Both seniors received flowers, framed posters and a round of applause.
Doubles tennis action was a quick battle between the third-ranked Buckeyes and the Big Red. Gabrielle De Santis and Sandy Niehaus defeated Andersson and her partner Vasanti Shinde in a 6-0 final decision. Husker freshmen Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad dropped a match at No. 3 doubles against Buckeyes Ferny Angeles Paz and Anna Sanford, 6-3.
Tennis action moved onto into singles, where the Big Red fought hard to try and get ahead of the Buckeyes. At the No. 2 singles, Reifeis was able to put one set away 6-3 over Sanford, before falling 6-0, 6-1 for the next two.
Charging back against another tough opponent, Hanna powered through a back and forth first set, but unfortunately dropped the match 7-6, 6-2 against Angeles Paz.
