Huskers Fall to Cal State Fullerton, 4-1

Fullerton, Calif. - The Nebraska women's tennis team fell in a 4-1 decision at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. The Huskers now sit with one loss on the season, with an overall record of 15-1, including a 2-0 in the Big Ten. 

Doubles action started the morning for the Big Red, where both the No.1 and No.2 doubles duos fell to their Titan opponents. Mary Hanna and Paula Del Cueto Castillo dropped a close 6-4 match against Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela. Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin pushed to 6-3 over Lisa Andersson and Vasanti Shinde at No.2 doubles. 

Freshman duo Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad were leading No.3 doubles 6-5, however with the clinch of the doubles point by Cal State Fullerton caused the match to end unfinished. 

Sophomore Del Cueto Castillo snagged the only win for the Big Red against the Titans. The Sevila, Spain, native plucked two challenging sets over Karla Portalatin of Cal State Fullerton. Del Cueto Castillo ended the match with a 6-4, 6-3 final score to give Nebraska one team point on the day.  

Despite the win for Del Cueto Castillo, the Big Red surrendered three of the five remaining singles matches to give the 5-1 Titans.

Nebraska continues road action this weekened as it vista Big Ten rivals Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tennis action against the Golden Gophers picks up on Saturday, March 25 at 10 a.m. in Minneapolis, Minn. The Badgers welcome Nebraska in Madison, Wis., on Sunday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. Both matches times are in central time and subject to change.
