Lincoln – The Nebraska women’s tennis team battled the Air Force Falcons on Friday night and posted a 6-1 win in its first match of the 2017 at the Dillon Tennis Center.
Doubles action marked the beginning of the match, where the Huskers fought hard to take home the team point. Freshman Claire Reifeis and Katerina Matysova pulled a quick 6-1 victory over Lily Forlini and Nadeen Lieberman.
Senior duo Mary Hanna and Lisa Andersson then opened their final tennis season in the No.1 doubles spot and competed, but fell to Air Force's Elizabeth Barnickel and TJ Fumagalli, 6-1. Andersson later dropped her singles match to Fumagalli, 6-2, 6-2.
To secure the team point for Nebraska, returners Vasanti Shinde and Paula Del Cueto Castillo took the No.2 doubles matchup against Chole Forlini and Jocelle Rudico. The pair claimed a 7-5 set to end doubles action, with NU up 1-0.
Hanna then added an individual win, finishing two quick sets (6-3, 6-0) over Rudico. Freshman Jeannie Lozowski followed suit and pocketed a tough 6-1, 6-4 win over L. Forlini at No.4 singles.
Shinde secured her second win of the night, pulling a 6-3, 6-3 win over Barnickel, bringing the Huskers to 4-0 and finalizing the team victory for the Big Red. Also claiming her second win of the match was Reifeis, who completed a difficult 7-5, 6-1 match over C. Forlini at the No.1 singles position.
Matysova also earned an additional victory for with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lieberman at the No. 5 singles spot. That pushed the Huskers to a final score of 6-1 for the evening.
The Huskers will be back in action tomorrow at the Dillon Tennis Center when they take on UMKC at 11 a.m. and South Dakota at 3:30 p.m. Fans can stay up to date by checking Huskers.com for live stats and match recaps.
