Evanston, Ill. – The Nebraska soccer team played No. 20 Northwestern to a scoreless tie in regulation, but fell to the Wildcats in the penalty kick shootout, 4-3, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
For the second time this season, the Huskers and Wildcats played to a 0-0 draw in 110 minutes, with the first match occurring on Oct. 16 in Lincoln, Neb. This time, the two teams each had 12 shots, but Northwestern held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Aubrei Corder tied a career high with seven saves in the game. For the fifth consecutive game, she didn’t allow a goal, and extended her scoreless minutes streak to 510.
In the penalty kick shootout, the two teams made each of their first two kicks, as Nebraska’s Nikki Turney and Jaycie Johnson found the back of the net. In the third round, Emily O’Neal’s attempt was saved by Northwestern goalkeeper Lauren Clem, while Northwestern’s Kim Jerantowski scored to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage.
In the fourth round, senior Caroline Flynn’s shot hit the goalpost and stayed out. Corder saved the attempt from Kayla Sharples to keep the score 3-2 heading to the fifth round.
Nebraska’s Sami Reinhard made her attempt to tie it 3-3 before Northwestern’s final attempt. Marisa Viggiano scored to give Northwestern the 4-3 win in the shootout and send the Wildcats to the Big Ten semifinals.
