Lincoln, Neb. – Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Nebraska soccer team (10-5-1, 4-3-1 Big Ten) scored twice in the second half to take down Illinois (5-10-1, 2-5-1 Big Ten) at Barbara Hibner Stadium on Thursday night.
Senior Jaycie Johnson put NU up 1-0 in the 65th minute with her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Caroline Buelt. The goal also marked the 41st of her career, which puts her in a tie for seventh in program history. It was Johnson’s 16th career game-winning goal, the second-most in program history. Johnson has scored 10 goals in her last 11 games after not scoring in her first five games this season.
Junior Haley Hanson scored in the 79th minute off an assist from Meg Brandt to give the Huskers a 2-0 edge. The goal marked Hanson’s seventh of the season. She has scored nine goals in her last 18 games, dating back to last season, after scoring once in her first 32 career games.
The Huskers outshot the Fighting Illini, 14-4, including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. NU also took seven corner kicks, compared to Illinois’ two. Freshman goalkeeper Aubrei Corder earned her sixth shutout of the 2016 campaign.
The Huskers host No. 22 Northwestern on Sunday at Hibner Stadium, with kickoff set for 1:05 p.m. (CT). The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus on BTN2Go.
