Pitching Shines in Red-White Scrimmage

Lincoln - Nebraska's pitchers got the better of the Husker hitters on Sunday during the White team's 1-0 six-inning victory at the Red-White Fall Scrimmage at Bowlin Stadium.

The scrimmage featured designated pitching appearances for all four healthy Husker pitchers, with pitchers working for both the Red and White squads. Offensively, seven players batted for the Red team and six for the White squad, with pre-determined three- or four-player batting orders each half inning.

In the circle, senior Cassie McClure and junior Kaylan Jablonski each combined to throw 4.0 total scoreless innings, two innings each for the Red and White squads. McClure allowed only three hits and struck out two in the scrimmage, while Jablonski scattered five hits and struck out one in her 4.0 innings of work. Junior Caitlin Bartsch scattered three hits in 2.0 scoreless innings, including one inning for both the Red and White teams. Junior Taylor Kadavy allowed one run in 2.0 innings of work, surrendering the only run of the scrimmage despite allowing just one hit, the fewest of any of the four pitchers.

The lone run of the scrimmage was scored in the bottom of the second inning. A one-out walk and a hit batter put runners on first and second before junior Gina Metzler singled off Kadavy to load the bases. Jablonski then lifted a sacrifice fly to score sophomore pinch runner Alyvia Simmons with what proved to be the only run of the scrimmage.

Metzler was one of three Huskers to record two hits in the scrimmage. Metzler finished 2-for-5 for the White squad, while junior Taylor Otte went 2-for-4 for the Red team, as did senior Rachel Arthur.

Nebraska plays its first exhibition game of the fall on Tuesday, when the Huskers face Bellevue at 5 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium. Admission is free into all fall games at Bowlin Stadium.
