Nebraska Claims Seven at Midland

Midland, Texas – The Nebraska women’s tennis team took home seven wins against elite opponents Friday at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational during the first two rounds of main draw singles action, one round of back draw singles and a portion of doubles play.

The rain postponed the remainder of doubles matches until Saturday morning at 8. The Big Red pairs that could not complete their matches on Friday evening will resume their matches on Saturday.

Gaining valuable experience and marking their Husker debuts were freshmen Jeannie Lozowski, Claire Reifeis, M’Balia Bangoura and Hayley Haakenstad, who helped capture five of the Huskers' seven total wins.

No. 14 seed Lozowski, a Port Saint Lucie, Fla. native, defeated Anna Wiechert of UT Arlington in a quick 6-4, 6-4 final score to open the morning. Lozowski then fell to Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-2 in main draw singles.

Contributing two wins was Bangoura, who fell in her first match of the morning before snagging a 5-1 win against Andrea Le Blanc of New Mexico by retirement in back draw singles. Bangoura added her second win on the doubles court, teamming with Katerina Matysova for an 8-6 win over Penn State’s Taylor Shukow and Dasha Sapogova.

Continuing the impressive freshmen debuts was Reifeis, who pocketed a victory against Montana Moore of Tyler Junior College, 6-4, 6-4. Haakenstad followed suit by winning a back draw singles match against Fernanda Orona of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 6-2, 6-4.

Also contributing wins for Nebraska were senior Lisa Andersson and junior Katerina Matysova. In singles, Andersson defeated Pippa Carr of Texas State, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 before falling to Aleksandra Zenovka of TCU later in the day. Matysova pulled a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over Bennet Dunn from Penn State.

In addition to the continuation of doubles action, both Haakenstad and Bangoura will compete in the second round of back draw singles at 9 a.m. Saturday.
