The Nebraska women's tennis team opens its fall season on Friday, as the Huskers travel to the Midland Racquet Club Invitational in Texas.
The Huskers open the weekend on the Racquet Club courts with singles action on Friday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. Nebraska will take eight members of its 12-person roster to Midland to maintain a balance of experience and fresh energy.
The 64-player draw features a pair of Husker freshmen seeded in the top 16 spots.
Freshman Claire Reifeis from Indianapolis, Ind., snagged the No. 6 seed and leads the Huskers off in singles action. Reifeis will face Montana Moore of Tyler Junior College Friday morning. Reifeis also will partner with senior Lisa Andersson in doubles action later in the tournament.
Freshman Jeannie Lozowski, a native of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., claimed the No. 14 seed and will go head to head with the University of Texas-Arlington’s Anna Wichert Friday during singles action. Lozowski will be paired with another Nebraska newcomer, Hayley Haakenstad (Chanhassen, Minn.), for doubles play over the weekend.
Also gaining tournament experience over the weekend will be freshman M’Balia Bangoura, sophomore Vasanti Shinde, junior Katerina Matysova and seniors Lisa Andersson and Mary Hanna.
Nebraska's strong doubles duo of Hanna and Shinde earned the No. 4 seed at Midland. They will face Carr and Jones of Texas State to open doubles competition.
