Johnson, Huskers Fly Past Dayton, 3-1

Lincoln, Neb. – Senior Jaycie Johnson scored twice to lead the Nebraska soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Dayton at Barbara Hibner Stadium on Friday night.

The Huskers improve to 6-1-0 on the season, which marks their best seven-game start since 2001. NU is 4-0-0 at home during the 2016 campaign, and has won four consecutive games overall.

In the 42nd minute, junior Haley Hanson got the Huskers on the board with a header off Sydney Miramontez’s corner kick. Hanson’s goal is her third of the season and sixth of her career. She has scored five times in the last nine games, dating back to last season, after scoring once in her first 32 games at Nebraska.

Dayton evened the score in the 66th minute when Alexis Kiehl scored her team-leading fourth goal off an assist from Libby Leedom. Tied 1-1, NU’s Johnson scored twice in a span of five minutes to guide the Huskers to victory.

Johnson’s first goal was a header off a Miramontez corner kick in the 78th minute. In the 83rd minute, Johnson slipped past the Flyer goalkeeper and knocked it in from 10 yards out. After not scoring in the first five games of the season, Johnson has scored three times in the last two matches.

Johnson, a Lake Winnebago, Mo., native, has 34 career goals after Friday night, 12 career game-winning goals and eight multiple-goal games. She led an offense that outshot Dayton by a 13-5 margin, which included an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Aubrei Corder earned four saves, while surrendering one goal in 90 minutes of work. Through seven games, Corder has 28 saves and five goals allowed.

The Huskers compete in their final non-conference match on Sunday at No. 13 Clemson. The game, which will be streamed on WatchESPN, is set to start at 11 a.m. (CT).
