University Park, Pa. - The Nebraska women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at Penn State on Friday. The Huskers slipped to 17-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten while Penn State improved to 7-9 and 3-3 in the conference.
Vasanti Shinde earned singles and doubles wins on the day, teaming with Mary Hanna for a 6-1 doubles victory over Penn State's Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway at No. 2 doubles to improve to 16-2 on the season. Shinde, a freshman from Pune, India, added a 7-6, 6-3 win over PSU's Devan McCluskey at No. 3 singles.
Mackenna Maddox-Herr earned Nebraska's first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Whiteaway at No. 6 singles.
Despite the win for Shinde and Hanna at No. 2 doubles, the Huskers surrendered the doubles point. Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson dropped a hard-fought 7-6 decision to Kim Surin and Devan McCluskey at No. 1 doubles. Penn State then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win by Katia Bilk and Samantha Tutelman over Maddox-Herr and Katerina Matysova at No. 3.
Maddox-Herr evened the team score at 1-1 with her win at No. 6 singles, but Penn State won four of the final five matches to win the match.
Nebraska returns to road action on Sunday when the Huskers face No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus. The dual begins at 11 a.m.
