Nebraska notched its 10th Big Ten win of the season...the run-rule victory was Nebraska's seventh of the season...Kaylan Jablonski tossed her first career no-hitter, although she was a part of a combined no-hitter vs. Montana in 2015...MJ Knighten hit her 19th home run of the season in the first inning, becoming only the second Husker to homer 19 times in a season (also Ali Viola)...Knighten homered again in the third inning to mark her third game this season with multiple home runs and the fourth multi-homer game of her career...Laura Barrow finished two hits, and she recorded multiple hits in both games of the doubleheader. |
Lincoln - Kaylan Jablonski tossed a no-hitter and MJ Knighten homered twice, as the Nebraska softball team salvaged a split in its Friday doubleheader against Purdue with an 8-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap at Bowlin Stadium.
Jablonski was dominant in the circle, allowing only a second inning walk. Jablonski (7-5) tossed her first shutout of the season and the third of her career. The no-hitter was also the first of her career, although she was a part of a combined no-hitter against Montana last season. Jablonski added five strikeouts and retired the final 12 batters she faced.
With Jablonski cruising, Knighten provided her with all the run support she would need. Knighten went 3-for-3 with two homers and a career-high-tying five RBIs. She produced her third multi-homer game of the season and the third of her career. Sophomore Laura Barrow contributed with a 2-for-2 day that included a double, two runs and an RBI.
Nebraska took its first lead of the doubleheader in the bottom of the first inning when Knighten hit a one-out solo home run.
Knighten struck again in the third inning, blasting a three-run homer that put Nebraska on top 4-0. Knighten's second homer of the game scored Barrow, who led off the inning with a double, and senior Kiki Stokes, who followed Barrow's double with a walk.
The Huskers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. Freshman Alyvia Simmons began the inning with a single. Sophomore Madi Unzicker then walked and Barrow recorded an RBI single to make it 5-0. Stokes loaded the bases with a single to left before Knighten followed with another RBI single to make it 6-0. Senior Alicia Armstrong then recorded an RBI single and on the play, a throwing error allowed a second run to score.
Leading 8-0, Jablonski closed out the run-rule victory by retiring the side in order in the top of the fifth, including a pair of strikeouts. With the win, Nebraska improved to 29-17 on the season and moved to 10-8 in Big Ten play.
Gina Snyder, who earned the save in Purdue's game one victory, took the loss in the nightcap. Snyder (5-7) allowed four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings, as Purdue fell to 27-23 on the season and dropped to 8-11 in league play.
Nebraska and Purdue will wrap up their series on Saturday at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Should rain wash out Saturday's game, the teams would then conclude the series on Sunday at Noon.
