Huskers Win Quadrangular at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Nebraska track and field team swept the team titles at the Kansas Relays quadrangular on Saturday at Rock Chalk Park.

The Husker women scored 206 points to beat out Kansas (191). The men totaled 226 points to edge Kansas (219) by seven points. 

A number of Huskers turned in season-best performances on a windy day in Lawrence. 

Kaiwan Culmer posted an all-time best triple jump of 52-2 3/4 to win the event. His mark ranks No. 12 nationally and puts him at No. 9 in NU history. Seth Derr threw 227-4 to place second in the javelin. His mark ranks fifth in NU history. James Nizich also posted a big javelin PR of 212-9 to place third. For the women, Sarah Firestone won the javelin with her best throw of the season - 181-9 - to move to No. 8 in the country.

Toni Tupper was second in the shot put with a throw of 52-11 1/2, a new personal best that ranks ninth in NU outdoor history. Nick Percy threw a personal best of 198-7 in the discus, which was good for second place and puts him at No. 7 nationally. 

Andy Neal (51.75) won the 400-meter hurdles in a photo finish with teammate Sean Pille (51.76). Jasmine Barge was the women's champion with a time of 59.19, while Kristen Dowell was second with a personal-best 59.41. Barge also won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.32, while Chanel Freeman was third with a time of 13.57. 

The Husker men took the top three spots in the high jump. Landon Bartel and Grant Anderson both cleared 6-11, while Mike McCann went over 6-9. The men also went 1-2-3 in the 1,500 meters, as Jacob Olson won with a time of 3:53.52, and Matt Gilbert (3:53.78) and Nolan Border (3:54.85) were right behind. 

Cody Rush won the 400 meters quadrangular in 46.82, while Oliver Alexandre took second in 47.06. Sam Bransby won the open 400 meters in 47.61, while Tanner Townsend was third (47.86). Karolina Pahlitzsch took second in the 400 meters (55.53). 

Christian Cook won the 110-meter hurdles title with a time of 14.11, while Pille was second at 14.15. Lakayla Harris was the 200-meter runner-up with a season-best 23.74. 

Paula Andrie and Tess Merrill claimed the top-two spots in the pole vault by clearing 13-8 1/4 and 13-4 1/4, respectively. Reka Czuth tied for the high jump title by clearing up to 5-9 1/4 without a miss. 

Jazmin McCoy took home the women's long jump title with a distance of 20-7 3/4, while Czuth was the runner-up (19-8 3/4). Elijah Lucy was the runner-up in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-4 3/4. 

Brittni Wolczyk was second in the women's javelin, throwing 158-3. Danie Plank was third at 155-6.

The men's 4x400 relay ran a season-best time of 3:06.58 to win the event. The women's 4x100-meter relay won with a time of 45.69. 

The Huskers compete at the NWU Spring Open next Wednesday and the Drake Relays on Wednesday through Saturday.
