Lincoln- The No. 69 Nebraska women's tennis team improved to 12-1 on the season with a 5-2 win over Big Ten Conference rival Iowa on Wednesday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Picking up a combined total of three wins on the day were doubles partners Mary Hanna and Vasanti Shinde. The pair continued to dominate in doubles action as they flew through a quick 6-0 victory over their Hawkeye opponents Zoe Douglas and Annette Dohanics. The win No. 2 doubles improved Hanna and Shinde to a perfect 10-0 on the doubles court this season.
Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson showed their leadership on the court as they pulled out a hard-fought 6-4 victory over the Hawkeyes' No. 1 doubles team of Kristen Thoms and Anastasia Reimchen to secure the team doubles point for Nebraska. Lehmicke joined Hanna and Shinde with two wins over Iowa by adding a win at No. 1 singles.
In singles action, Katerina Matysova finished as the second completed match with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Natalie Looney to give the Huskers a 2-1 lead over the Hawkeyes. Hanna finished next, capturing her second win of the match with a 6-2, 6-4 final score over Kristen Thoms. Shinde then snagged her second win of the afternoon at the No. 4 spot, where she battled Iowa's Annette Dohanics through two sets before coming out on top,6-3, 6-3, to officially clinch the win for Nebraska.
Finishing out the victory for Nebraska was Lehmicke, who pushed through a tie-break first set to post a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Reimchen.
With the win in their Big Ten opener, the Huskers closed their season-opening 13-match homestand with a 12-1 record. Nebraska will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, when the Huskers travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to battled No. 52 Purdue.
