Huskers Upset No. 62 Minnesota

Lincoln- The Nebraska women’s tennis team posted an impressive 4-3 upset of No. 62 Minnesota on Friday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

With the win, the Huskers improved to 16-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten Conference while notching their fourth consecutive victory.

Doubles action kicked off the Big Red’s first outdoor match of the season on three of the 12 outdoor tennis courts at the Dillon Tennis Center. Team captain Maggy Lehmicke and her doubles partner Lisa Andersson made quick work of a 6-3 set over their Paula Rincon-Otero and AnneMarie Emme.

Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox-Herr continued their win streak for the week after they snagged a hard-fought 7-6 doubles victory over Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher. The duo’s win secured the doubles point for Nebraska.

Lehmicke and Matysova picked up additional victories in singles play. Lehmicke swung through a quick 6-1, 6-3 singles win over Caroline Ryba to assist Nebraska with a team point. Also adding to Nebraska’s overall score, Matysova claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Emme.

Closing out the upset for the Huskers was star freshman Vasanti Shinde, who pushed through two tough sets to defeat Jessika Mozia and post a 6-3, 6-2 final score. Shinde improved to 14-4 overall in singles play this season with the victory.

Next up for Nebraska is Wisconsin on Sunday, March 27, at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin with doubles play at 1:30 p.m.
